STC 20–30 — Very poor
Conversations are clearly understood through the partition.
Little privacy; everyday sounds transmit easily.
STC 30–40 — Poor
Normal speech is intelligible; loud speech is prominent.
Provides minimal separation between spaces.
STC 40–50 — Moderate
Normal speech is audible but not always intelligible.
Loud speech still noticeable but less intrusive.
Adequate for basic privacy needs.
STC 50–60 — Good
Loud speech is mostly inaudible.
Everyday sounds significantly reduced.
Meets typical expectations for residential comfort.
STC 60–70 — Very good
Most airborne noise is well-contained.
Suitable for higher-end living spaces, offices, and many commercial uses.
STC 70+ — Excellent
High-performance acoustic separation.
Speech and most airborne noise barely perceptible.

Generic IIC Rating Scale
IIC 20–30 — Very poor
Every footstep, heel click, or dropped object is loud and intrusive.
Typical of hard surfaces with little impact isolation.
IIC 30–40 — Poor
Footsteps and impact noise are clearly heard and may be disruptive.
Basic or minimal impact noise control.
IIC 40–50 — Moderate
Everyday impact sounds (walking, light movement) are audible but less sharp.
Acceptable for non-sensitive spaces; borderline for dwellings.
IIC 50–60 — Good
Normal foot traffic becomes faint or barely noticeable.
Meets most building-code expectations for multi-family living.
